I received the summons on a bitter morning, the kind of cold that tears at bare skin. I was to report to the Reich Chancellery, ostensibly for a new research assignment. I had anticipated bureaucracy, tedious meetings, perhaps the usual logistical headaches that came with wartime assignments. I had not anticipated him.

Hitler stood before me, pale, small-framed, but burning with a fire that seemed unnatural in its intensity. I had never met him before, and being in the same room unsettled me more than I cared to admit. He spoke with a sharp, practised eloquence, every word precise, every gesture controlled. Yet his gaze—steady, unblinking—betrayed something else entirely. Beneath that brilliance was a fevered drive that logic couldn’t contain.
