The snow was falling before we reached the crest.

That alone should have warned us. It was late summer in northern France, and the forest around Mont Noir was thick with leaves and damp heat. Yet beyond the tree line, past the shell-scarred roads and abandoned farmhouses, a fine black snow lay across the ground, settling like a blanket of scorched earth.

I was attached to the 2nd Battalion as a medical officer, seconded temporarily to an intelligence detachment following reports of a German research facility abandoned during the retreat from Flanders. No enemy resistance was expected. That, in retrospect, was our first mistake.
