The fog haunts Kessler the way the past haunts its people.

The town sat on a ridge of ancient stone between the Forêt des Saints and the marshlands, a place where fog crept like a living thing, and the air always smelled faintly of peat and old secrets. The war had changed many things in Kessler. Buildings had been destroyed and rebuilt, people had come and gone, and even the marshlands had shifted and grown. But one thing remained as it always had — quiet, understated, and waiting — the Old Well.

It was older than the church, older than the square, older than anyone who cared to remember. Its stones were worn smooth by centuries of harsh weather, the surface slick and cold like a corpse, its mouth gaping black and bottomless, like a pit carved straight into hell.
