"I was alive. And alone in a forest that stretched in every direction."

Fire. So much fire. And the screams.

Flames tore through the night sky, lighting the street in violent orange. I was running toward the burning building, boots slipping on shattered glass and debris. Part of the roof had already caved in from the first blast, smoke pouring out in thick, choking waves. People were screaming. Bodies lay scattered across the pavement — some moving, some not.

“Get back!” someone shouted, but I kept going, pushing through the heat and the noise, desperate to reach the doorway before the whole place came down.

A second explosion hit before I even saw it coming.

The shockwave slammed into me like a fist, throwing me backwards. I hit the ground hard, the breath torn from my lungs. Dust and fire rained down. My ears rang. My vision blurred. I tried to get up, tried to see through the smoke—

—and everything dissolved into roaring fire and falling brick.
